Water-based degreaser promises solvent-based efficiency

February 1, 2016

A WATER-based degreaser will help companies avoid the restrictions they face when using solvent-based degreasers, Australian company Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST Solutions) says.

While solvent based degreasers such as diesel, kerosene, mineral turpentine and mineral spirits work effectively as degreasers, they carry the risk of potential hazards including fire, explosion and dangerous fumes, RST Solutions said.

As a result, the storage of flammable substances such as solvent based degreasers is controlled by strict Australia-wide laws including the “Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids” standard, placing controls and restrictions on businesses using and handling solvent based degreasers.

RST Solutions’ water based degreaser, known as Eliminator, is a blend of high performance surfactants, complexing agents and pH modifiers including anti-corrosion chemistry.

It is a multipurpose, industrial strength solvent replacement degreaser with a wide range of applications, including cleaning petroleum-based soiling and marine degreasing, as well as degreasing of engines and machinery and of garage and workshops floors.

RST Solutions operations and technical director David Handel said that as solvent-based degreasers were getting phased out through environmental and health legislation, a broad variety of industries are looking for effective water based degreasers.

“The problem is that traditional water-based degreasers generally aren’t as effective as solvent-based degreasers,” Mr Handel said.

“RST Solutions specialises in fine particle management through clever chemistry globally to large mining and earthworks projects, mainly in the areas of dust control and soil stabilisation.” he said.

“Knowing that caked on oil is full of fine particles, RST Solutions started a research and development program more than three years ago to invent a safe and effective water-based degreaser to meet growing demand.

“One of the crucial elements is that the product must not affect quality alloy components, so we undertook rigorous testing to ensure Eliminator is safe to use on alloy.

“The feedback from car mechanics like Eurotune, who deal with top end cars, is that it’s the best water-based degreaser on the market.”

The company’s head office is based at Burleigh Heads, Queensland with an additional office in Carlisle, WA.
