RST SUPERSKIN COATS QLD COAL WAGONS

AUSTRALIAN dust suppression and soil stabilisation company Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST)’s cutting-edge and environmentally friendly RT4 Superskin solution is being used as part of the rail wagon veneering process for the transportation of coal from New Hope Group’s New Acland Coal Mine.

Designed as a crusting agent for material transport veneer coating, RST’s RT4 Superskin is diluted in water and sprayed directly onto the surface of loaded coal, mitigating potential dust emissions as a result of its advanced Polymer Surfactant Technology.

The innovative water-based dust suppressant crusts and binds the coal’s surface layer to create a durable veneer coating that prevents the movement of dust and fine particles throughout the transportation phase.

Working with Queensland based civil engineering company Shadforths Civil Contractors, who have designed and built the new rail wagon veneering system at New Hope Group’s Jondaryan Rail Loading Facility, located west of Toowoomba, allowed RST’s RT4 Superskin solution to be easily sprayed over the top of uncovered bulk coal wagons.

Through one automated spray application during the loading process, coal fine particles are tightly suppressed as the water dispersive polymers dry.

This process ensures dust is physically contained as the coal rail wagons travel from pit to port, complying with Queensland’s Coal Dust Management Plan and meeting the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s standards.

Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) operations and technical director David Handel said through utilising Shadforths latest engineered spraying system, RST had the opportunity to tailor their advanced technology to develop a veneering solution that was fast-acting, durable and environmentally friendly.

By using their cutting-edge Polymer Surfactant Technology (PST), Mr Handel said it also allowed for the veneer coating to be ultra-concentrated, offering up to a 90% reduction in all chemical requirements – providing a cost effective alternative to rail wagon covers.

“Our RT4 Superskin product is a highly effective, non hazardous dust suppressant specifically developed for the minerals transportation industry,” Mr Handel said.

“We have been working with Shadforths to apply this super concentrated solution onto the coal rail wagons leaving New Hope Group’s New Acland Coal Mine. The product is sprayed directly onto the coal’s surface during the loading stage, coating the material to stop potential dust lift off and escapement occurring, as the coal is transported.

“Comprising the latest in eco-friendly chemical technology, RT4 is both easy and efficient in application and is also a cost-effective alternative to covering the coal wagons with materials and lids. The strength and durability of the RT4 solution will also prevent the veneer coating from cracking throughout travel.”

RT4 Superskin is a part of RST’s ground-breaking polymer surfactant product range, which also features the innovative RT5 Superskin product for exposed stockpiles and its latest solution, Avenger for haul road operations.

Mr Handel said all products are ultra-concentrated co-polymer formulations, combing RST’s unique polymer surfactant technologies with advanced nano technology which ultimately assists mining companies with cutting costs, conserving water and reducing overall dust emission levels.

“By combining our nanotechnology, a micro particle that has a major surface area when formulated, with our PSTs we are able to develop dust suppressants that are super concentrated and highly effective,” Mr Handel said.

“It is about finding the right solution that is cost effective and achieves immediate and durable results. Through our PST range, mine sites are able to treat and control their dust issues from light vehicle and haul road operations, stockpiles, tailings and broad acre area's and transportation such as rail wagons and truck wagons.
